Italy’s cultural legacy is one of the greatest in human history — from the poetry of Dante and the art of the Renaissance to the music of Verdi, the cinema of Fellini, and the cuisine that has conquered the world. The Dante Society of Virginia celebrates this rich heritage through our programs, events, and community.
Italian Arts & Literature
The Society’s programs explore the full breadth of Italian cultural achievement:
- Literature: From Dante’s Divine Comedy to the works of Petrarch, Boccaccio, Pirandello, Calvino, and Eco
- Art: Renaissance masters (Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael), Baroque (Caravaggio, Bernini), Futurism, and contemporary Italian art
- Music: Opera (Verdi, Puccini, Rossini), classical (Vivaldi), and Italian popular music
- Cinema: Fellini, Visconti, Pasolini, Antonioni, Benigni, Moretti, and Sorrentino

Featured: Dante’s Influence
Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) is considered the father of the Italian language. His Divine Comedy is one of the greatest works of world literature, a visionary journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise that has inspired artists, writers, and thinkers for over 700 years.
The Society is proud to bear his name and to carry forward his legacy of elevating the Italian language and culture.
